What is the Gift of Reading?

United Way Australia’s Christmas fundraising appeal to help kids in disadvantaged Australian communities gain the skills they need to start school ready to read. Every year, businesses large and small across Australia run a Gift of Reading campaign in the weeks leading up to Christmas. Get involved today!

1. Who is supported by the Gift of Reading campaign?

More than 1-in-5 Australian kids start school each year without the skills they need to learn to read, tis rate is even higher in communities of disadvantage. Sadly, most kids that start behind never catch up, and the impacts of low literacy often escalate during adulthood. That’s why the Gift of Reading supports children, living in communities identified by the Australian Early Development Census as at-risk of starting school without the skills they need to learn to read, to develop vital early literacy skills.

Last year, businesses raised $60,000 through the Gift of Reading campaign, which allowed United Way to provide early literacy support to hundreds more children in disadvantaged communities across Australia. This year we aim to raise $72,000 to help give many more children the opportunity to reach their full potential.

2. Why support early learning in Australia?

Did you know more than 1-in-5 Australian kids start school each year without the skills they need to learn to read? This rate is even higher in disadvantaged communities. Most kids that start behind, never catch up and sadly, the impacts of low literacy often escalate during adulthood.

But we can change this. The research is clear that birth to age five is critical for brain and language development. Early literacy intervention changes lives. Together, our early literacy programs are transforming the lives of kids by:

  • delivering monthly books to kids from birth

  • supporting parents and carers to read more with their pre-school aged children, and

  • strengthening early literacy in communities where kids are more than twice as likely to start school unprepared.
