Paying the Bills
Here, educators will find everything they need to teach a class on financial literacy to high school students. This is one of five Financial Literacy modules, each includes teaching guides and worksheets, they are free to download and ready to use.
SAY NO TO SHORT-TERM LOANS
Due to economic circumstances, many people use short-term loans – through agencies such has Pawn shops and Pay Day Loan companies – to access money quickly. They usually find themselves in further financial debt when they are not able to pay the high interest rates on these loans. Many young people are unaware of their financial options if they are unable to pay their bills on time. When students learn the importance of good credit and good spending practices they are less likely to follow poor examples of personal economics that may be seen at home.
This module is designed to make students aware of the high costs involved in short term loans through agencies such as Pawn Shops and Pay Day Loans companies. The purpose of the learning activities is to provide strategies for dealing with challenging bills and how to take advantage of payment plans. The module’s activities involve a variety group of calculations, class discussions and internet based research.
NOTE: Game of Loans is an excellent Four Corners show on Pay Day Loans. Reported by Stephen Long and presented by Kerry O’Brien, aired 30 March 2015 on ABC. This 46-minute video is a good warm-up for the class. Stream it here: www.abc.net.au/4corners/stories/2015/03/30/4205225.htm
