COLLABORATING IN THE CITY OF RYDE

We’re bringing community, service providers, business, government and philanthropy together across the City of Ryde to better understand the issues impacting children and youth and facilitate effective, local responses to ensure all children can thrive in school and in later life.

Community Profile: West Ryde

  • Families: 2134
  • Children aged 0-8: 1177
  • Children starting school developmentally vulnerable: 28.7%
    (22.5% national average)
  • Youth unemployment: 11.5%
    (12% national average)

WHY WE WORK IN THE CITY OF RYDE

While home to a bustling business and education community, many families and communities across Ryde continue to experience chronic disadvantage. In West Ryde, for example, childhood vulnerability rates are well above the state and national average, while in Macquarie Park, nearly 40% of youth are unemployed.

How we are responding

In 2014 we joined with leading Australian businesses to found the Macquarie Park Business-Community Partnership, the first of it’s kind. Today comprising 10 businesses, the initiative supports children and youth in the local community to thrive, providing vital funding and direct support for early learning and youth employment opportunities.

OUR ACTIVITIES

  • Leveraging the Macquarie Park business community’s skills and resources to effectively respond to local issues

  • Facilitating an Early Learning Action Group in West Ryde, including organising Magic of Storytelling pop-up playgroups and other activities to engage 150 families in early literacy and learning

  • Providing free home-delivered books and literacy resources to more than 200 families through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library
  • Providing more than 600 local students with career information sessions, industry tours, mock interviews and mentoring through the Macquarie Park Business-Community Partnership.
