The Business Park Stepping out in Support of local Children
Walking to GIVE LOCAL CHILDREN A BETTER START IN LIFE
Last year we kicked off Australia’s first business-community walkathon, with 500 employees representing nine companies from Macquarie Business Park stepping out to raise funds for local early literacy initiatives.
Part of the broader Macquarie Park Business-Community Partnership, the Community Walkathon not only exceeded its fundraising target, it provided a unique opportunity for the local business community to come together to network and learn about each other, and about local community issues.
What a buzz! It’s a fantastic initiative – our team enjoyed it very much.
“It was fantastic initiative – everyone had fun and was happy to be there, and to have the chance to be part of something bigger.” – Lisa, Walkathon Participant.
With more than $15,000 raised on the day, partnership initiatives like the Community Walkathon are helping provide books and other vital early learning resources to around 500 children in neighbouring West Ryde, where up to 1 in 3 children start school ‘developmentally vulnerable.’
Clayton Noble, United Way Australia CEO, says the partnership represents a new way for businesses to demonstrate their corporate social responsibility, with traditional charitable giving increasingly being displaced in favour of models offering direct connection and strategic impact.
“Many of us drive to and from work every day, yet have very little connection to the local community. With so much professional talent and expertise in one location at Macquarie Park, we saw a unique opportunity to give back to the community, to pool our skills and resources to create lasting social impact.”
Following the success of last year’s event, planning for the 2018 Macquarie Business Park Community Walkathon is already underway.
An excellent event, would love to see more local initiatives like the Walkathon.
Following a 7km course around the Macquarie Business Park, it will include fun activities at different corporate showcase stations, and finish with a sausage sizzle on the lawns of Johnson & Johnson.
“What a great way to spend an afternoon – walking the area, taking notice of the community around you, and meeting other employees from Macquarie Park who also want to make a social contribution,” –Marla Bozic, event organiser.
